Our New Guidance Counselor - Amy Selfe

September 2016

Dear Parents:

Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year at Tussing Elementary School.  We are happy to have your child at Tussing!

I would like to introduce myself to you all.  You may know that Mrs. Diane Corrigan retired last year.  I am the new school counselor at Tussing.  Some of you may already know me, because I worked for the last 9 years as one of the counselors at Colonial Heights Middle School.  I am really excited about this change to Tussing and look forward to working with you and your child.

I will be starting several programs at Tussing.  I will be visiting every classroom once a month to talk to the students about various topics like responsibility, careers, good character, etc.  If you are interested, we would love to have you visit your child’s classroom and tell us about your career.  If you would like to sign up, please contact me.

I will also begin group counseling sessions for students on various topics depending on need and availability.  These groups will run once a week for about 6-8 weeks, and they will run throughout the school year.   School counseling is available to students who may be having difficulty in school due to a specific concern like divorce, difficulty controlling anger, or other concerns.  These groups will discuss basic coping skills for various concerns and are educationally based with hands on lessons.  These groups are not meant to take the place of professional counseling if your child needs that service.  Please feel free to contact me if you are unsure of your child’s needs.  If you would like to sign your child up for a group, please contact me.

I am also available to meet with your child for short term individual counseling if your child has a more individual concern that is not easily discussed in a group setting.  Please contact me to discuss your concern if you would like me to see your child on an individual basis.

Finally, we are starting something new this year at Tussing.  Daily attendance is crucial to your child’s learning.  Elementary school is the time when your child will be learning the basic building blocks that they will use over and over in their future education.  I will be talking to Tussing students about the importance of coming to school every day, and we will be offering simple contests and incentives for good attendance.   Please send your child to school unless he or she has a fever, is vomiting, has diarrhea, has been sent home by Mrs. Cooper, or has been excused from school by a doctor.   We really miss our Tussing Tigers when they are not at school!

Please feel free to contact me at anytime if you have questions or concerns.  You can contact me by phone at 524-3440 or email at Amy_Selfe@colonialhts.net.  I am happy to help you in any way that I can.   I hope that you all have a wonderful school year.

Tussing's Friendship Rock

Friendship Rock

If a student (or an adult) is lonely and doesn’t have anyone to play with during recess, they can go over and sit on the rock, and others will see them and go over to invite them to play.

A special thank you to the Colonial Heights Recreation Department and City of Colonial Heights Public Works for the donation of the rock and moving it to its location on our playground.
